How Do Our NHS Assessments Work?
Autism Clinic London is a CQC registered Community Paediatric Consultant-led Autism service providing both virtual and face-to-face diagnostic assessments and post-diagnostic support for children between the age of 2 and 14 years.
Our 40-strong, highly experienced NHS clinical team provide a service that is in line with NICE standards and is available through the DPS Procurement Framework.
We have a proven track record of working with large NHS Trusts, including those listed above, to support and manage their Autism assessment requirements. Our partnerships are long-standing and collaborative, with patient experience consistently rated highly at 4.9 out of 5 on Trustpilot. We employ cutting-edge technology to ensure all processes are simple and easy for the NHS Trust admin teams to manage.
We provide full multi-disciplinary Autism diagnostic assessments from start to finish, or we can conclude part of the incomplete assessment for the local NHS trust, using standardised tools (ADOS2, ADIR). Our reports are bespoke and tailored to each NHS Trust’s local requirements and pathways.
We also provide post-diagnostic support packages tailored to needs of the referring NHS Trust including Speech and Language support, Psychology Support etc.
Our aim is to work with healthcare providers and individuals to help reduce waiting times for diagnosing children with Autism, as well as providing post-diagnostic support to help them reach their best potential.
Step One: Patient Information Collection from the NHS Trust
We will review the information provided by the NHS Trust. This may include:
• Initial referral
• Previous Community Paediatric / Multidisciplinary reports
• School/Parental reports and questionnaires.
Our Psychology team will collect further information from educational placement (if attending) if necessary.
If a physical examination has not been carried out previously, one will be arranged at our Harley Street or Paddington Clinic. If the child is under five years old, we will also carry out a developmental assessment (Schedule of Growing Skills 2- SOGS-2).
Step Two: Observation & Interactive Session
This starts with an observational assessment (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule – ADOS-2 or equivalent), where certain objects/toys are used to assess the child’s social communication, interaction and play.
This assessment will be carried out by our Speech and Language Therapist or Psychologist face-to-face at our Harley Street or Paddington Clinic, or adapted via video subject to your NHS Trust’s requirements.
Step Three: Diagnostic Interview with Feedback
A 90-minute diagnostic video interview with the parent will take place with one of our Specialist Paediatricians (this will include questions relating to the child’s medical and developmental history).
During this virtual appointment, our Specialist Paediatrician will also observe/interact with the child in their home environment.
Following this, the Paediatrician will review all the clinical information from the previous assessments, as well as any additional information provided, and will feedback the outcome to the parents and the NHS Trust.
Step Four: Post Diagnostic Care
If a diagnosis of Autism is made, families will be provided with:
- Information about local Autism support services (provided to us by the child’s local NHS Trust).
- The post-diagnostic resource pack from Autism Clinic London.
- Information about optional post-diagnostic support available from Autism Clinic London.
More information on our post-diagnostic services can be found here and on our Instagram feed.

Case Study One: Waiting List Initiatives
How Autism Clinic London helped an NHS Trust deliver 200 Autism assessments efficiently in order to reduce their waiting list.
When one NHS Trust faced a growing backlog of autism assessments, they turned to us to complete 200 Autism assessments within a four month timeframe.
A Technology Platform That Streamlined Every Step
At the heart of the success was Autism Clinic London’s bespoke digital platform, designed to make the entire assessment process seamless — from initial referral to final report delivery. The platform allowed secure data sharing between the Trust and Autism Clinic London’s clinicians, automated administrative workflows, and enabled real-time status tracking for each assessment.
This technology drastically reduced manual coordination and communication delays, ensuring that clinicians could focus their time where it mattered most — on high-quality patient care.
Delivering Reports With Speed and Precision
Every assessment concluded with a detailed diagnostic report tailored to the Trust’s clinical and administrative requirements. Thanks to the streamlined platform, these reports were delivered securely faster to parents and the referring NHS Trust.
95% of Patients Seen on Time with a DNA rate of less than 5%
Through the use of automated appointment reminders, smart scheduling, and digital pre-assessment forms, Autism Clinic London ensured that 95% of patients were seen within agreed timeframes with a DNA rate of less than 5%. The use of technology reduced no-shows and improved communication with families, while clinicians benefited from having all relevant information ready before appointments even began.
Tailored Pathways for Seamless NHS Integration
No two NHS Trusts are the same therefore, reports, outcomes, and data summaries were customised to align with the Trust’s existing autism pathways, ensuring compatibility with local multidisciplinary teams and follow-up services. This flexibility allowed the Trust to embed the service without disruption, maintaining continuity of care for patients.
Renewed Trust Through Results
Thanks to excellent clinical outcomes, efficient delivery, and consistently high satisfaction rates among both patients and staff, the original contract has been renewed three times. The ongoing collaboration continues to demonstrate how private sector innovation, when implemented responsibly, can support the NHS in reducing waiting times and improving patient experiences.

Case Study Two: Using tech to improve outcomes
Putting Patients First: How Autism Clinic London Ensures Exceptional Satisfaction in Autism Assessments
With autism assessments, patient satisfaction starts long before the appointment itself. Autism Clinic London takes a family-centred approach, ensuring that every family feels supported, informed, and comfortable throughout the assessment journey.
Understanding Each Patient from the Start
Before any assessment begins, a dedicated paediatrician contacts the child’s parents. This initial conversation is crucial for gathering essential information, understanding the child’s needs, and tailoring the assessment process accordingly. We ensure that every aspect of the assessment reflects the child’s unique circumstances, strengths, and challenges.
Technology That Keeps Communication Smooth
Once the initial parent confirmation of appointment availability is complete, technology plays a central role in keeping the process seamless. Families receive automated reminders via email and SMS both at the time of booking and 72 hours before the appointment, to reduce the risk of missed appointments. Our secure messaging system ensures that questions and updates are communicated efficiently. This digital support keeps families informed, reassured, and confident in the process.
Video Call Assessments for Comfort and Convenience
Once the face-to-face elements of the assessment are completed with the child, information gathering from the parents is done via video call. This also includes observing the child in a familiar environment. Where English is not the family’s first language, interpreters can be added seamlessly to video calls, ensuring clear communication and a culturally sensitive experience. All video calls are conducted through a standard browser, so no specialist software or downloads are necessary.
High Satisfaction Through Thoughtful Integration
By combining personalised parent engagement with technology-driven communication, Autism Clinic London achieves high levels of satisfaction from families. Parents feel listened to, children feel comfortable, and clinicians are able to provide assessments efficiently without compromising quality.
This patient-centred, tech-enabled approach demonstrates how innovation and empathy can work together to improve the experience of autism assessments — creating outcomes that are both clinically robust and personally supportive.
Secure Information Sharing
As a paperless service, our platform ensures secure sharing of information via two-factor authentication with both NHS Trusts and parents.
Case Study Three: Post-diagnostic care
Receiving an autism diagnosis is just the first step in a child’s journey. Post-diagnostic care is essential to ensure that children not only understand their diagnosis but also receive the tailored support they need to thrive. At Autism Clinic London, we emphasise a holistic approach that addresses every aspect of a child’s development, combining therapy, guidance, and practical support for families. We can help support NHS Trusts by filling gaps in their service for ongoing care.
Speech and Language Therapy
Communication is a core challenge for many children with autism. Speech and language therapy is critical in helping children develop functional communication skills, whether through verbal speech, alternative communication methods, or social communication strategies. The process involves a detailed assessment of the child’s current abilities, followed by targeted general support with one-to-one sessions if required. The outcomes can be transformative, improving social interactions, providing greater independence, and reducing frustration for both children and their families.
Sleep Support
Sleep difficulties are common among children with autism and can significantly impact behaviour, learning, and family wellbeing. Sleep support involves identifying underlying causes of sleep disruption, implementing structured bedtime routines, and offering targeted strategies such as behavioural interventions. By addressing sleep issues, children experience better mood regulation, improved focus during the day, and enhanced overall health — benefiting school, home, and social life.
Dietary Support
Nutrition plays a vital role in a child’s development, particularly for children with sensory sensitivities or specific dietary preferences. Dietary support includes assessment by specialists, creation of tailored meal plans, and guidance for parents on introducing balanced nutrition in a way that suits the child’s needs. Positive outcomes include improved energy levels, better physical health, and reduced mealtime stress for families.
Psychological Support
Emotional and behavioural challenges are common for children with autism, making psychological support essential. This can include cognitive-behavioural therapy, social skills groups, and parent coaching. Through structured sessions and ongoing monitoring, children learn strategies to manage anxiety, regulate emotions, and develop resilience. Families also receive guidance on creating supportive home environments, ensuring that gains made in therapy translate into everyday life.
Educational Psychology
Supporting a child’s learning environment is another critical aspect of post-diagnostic care. Educational psychologists work closely with educational placements to assess learning needs, provide targeted interventions, support with EHCP applications and advise on classroom strategies. This ensures that children receive personalised support in their educational setting, helping them reach their full educational potential while also building confidence and social skills.
Holistic Outcomes
When all these elements are combined, children potentially gain independence, build meaningful relationships, and thrive academically and socially. Families feel empowered and equipped with practical tools, resulting in long-term benefits that extend well beyond the clinic setting.
Post-diagnostic care is not just an add-on; it is an essential, integrated journey that maximises a child’s potential and ensures that an autism diagnosis leads to understanding, support, and growth.
